Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic domain extension is the single TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to order john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level names remained active.
